MedVirginia LLC, headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, was established in 2000 by Virginia healthcare providers to focus on initiatives to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare services through the innovative use of health information technology.
MedVirginia’s reputation and visionary leadership from key stakeholders in the provider community made possible MedVirginia's development and launch of MedVirginia Solution®, a community-based health information exchange (HIE), in January 2006. This milestone was a major step forward in MedVirginia’s vision for central Virginia to be the most electronically connected medical community in the U.S.
MedVirginia Solution provides a technical infrastructure to collect hospital, physician, lab and pharmacy data and organize it into a single electronic chart that authorized providers can access from a user-friendly, secure web portal. MedVirginia functionality continues to evolve to provide value-added services for its participants such as electronic results delivery to a provider’s electronic medical record.
In recent years, MedVirginia has established itself as a national leader in health IT interoperability and was the first HIE to be live on eHealth Exchange (formerly the Nationwide Health Information Network). In February 2009, MedVirginia established a partnership with the Social Security Administration for expedited disability benefit determination and was chosen as an exchange partner with the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense in the Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record (VLER) initiative. These initiatives have brought wide-reaching value to our partners such as revenue enhancement, improved outcomes and achievement of meaningful use and patient-centered medical home projects.
As a winner of the 2012 Virginia Healthcare Innovators Award for Health Information Exchange, MedVirginia embraces its leadership role for the future of health IT in the Commonwealth and across the nation.
